Acupuncture was used to treat equine insect bite hypersensitivity in a Hucul Pony

By Stefanie Hoyme née Schramm, DVM

Abstract

An 11-year old Hucul Pony gelding was treated with acupuncture to improve his equine insect bite hypersensitivity, also called Sweet Itch. Four acupuncture treatments were applied almost one month apart from each other. The condition of the skin improved rapidly and until now (June 25) the coat is shiny and the horse shows almost no pruritus, even there is already a high insect occurrence this spring and early summer.
