For the first time BEVAS proposes a Japanese Moxibustion and warm bamboo, Ontake course This is a 3-day course, December 2- 4th 2022.

Participants should be veterinarian acupuncturists.

Day 1
Overview of Japanese acupuncture and moxibustion

Aim

Participants will explore a broad overview of Japanese acupuncture and moxibustion and how it differs from Chinese styles, focusing in particular on cone moxa and warm needle technique. 

Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion: An Exploration

The day will explore Japanese acupuncture and moxibustion in broad strokes, covering history and unique aspects of Japanese style. Moving specifically to moxibustion, the day will cover different clinical aspects of moxa and address generalisations and misconceptions about moxibustion methods, so that participants are clear what can be achieved by each different method. 

 Each section of the day will finish with short, facilitated group discussions on how to make these methods relevant to veterinary practice.  

Clinical practice will include kyutoshin warm needle and chinetsukyu large cone moxa.

Objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • List five distinguishing characteristics of JAM
  • Define root treatment and distinguish it from branch treatment
  • Systematically palpate the channels and note significant reactions
  • Insert a needle with a guide tube, roll balls of moxa and secure them to the needle
  • Safely roll, light and apply large moxa cones
  • Describe Japanese acupuncture concepts of dosage and recognise sensitive patients

Day 2 and 3
Rhythmic moxibustion with Ontake warm bamboo

Aim

Participants will learn to use Moxibustion in the warm bamboo or Ontake to treat the root and branch, to treat pain and alleviate symptoms. Ontake can be integrated into any kind of acupuncture or bodywork practice that uses the meridian system.

Content Day 2 and Day 3

  • Ontake Origins
  • Introduction to Dr. Manaka and his ideas
  • Root and Branch treatment in Japanese Acupuncture.
  • Dr. Manaka meridian frequencies, wooden needle and hammer tapping zones.
  • Loading, lighting and applying Ontake.
  • Palpation, deficiency, and excess.
  • Bamboo Máx and Mini – Root treatment with Ontake.
  • Holographic Thinking
  • Dr. Tan´s concepts of body mirrors and images.
  • Dr. Manaka´s octahedral model
  • Meridian Pairings and a simple Ontake matrix.
  • Chasing the pain.
  • Dazhui Du14 and other meeting points.
  • Clinical applications: Branch treatments
  • The Goldilocks zone: Dosage and overtreatment.

Objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Systematically palpate the channel and note significant reactions
  • Load bamboo with moxa and light it safely
  • Perform tapping and closing, rolling, rocking, pressing, leaning, vibrating and knocking techniques with heated bamboo.
  • List and apply the frequencies for each meridian.
  • Apply a whole warm bamboo treatment to strengthen the root.
  • Describe Japanese acupuncture concepts of dosage and recognise sensitive patients.
  • Remedy overtreatment using Ontake.
  • Treat pain: select treatment channels according to the Ontake matrix and different holographic images of the body on the arms and legs.
  • A broad range of conditions including headache, neck pain, back pain, knee pain, constipation, diarrhorediarrhoea, stress, depression and anxiety.

Language: English and notes too.

The Sensei: Oran Kivity

The Sensei: Oran Kivity

Veteran British human acupuncturist Oran Kivity trained in Europe, China, and Japan.

In continuous practice since 1987, he specialised in Japanese methods and was one of the founders’ members of Toyohari UK, the British branch of the Toyohari Association of Japan. He taught acupuncture at the University of Westminster and the Northern College of Acupuncture for the ten years.

Oran is the author of four books about Japanese acupuncture and moxibustion, including the popular Moxa in Motion with the Ontake Method.

Passionate about acupuncture and learning, he continues to teach internationally, as well as coaching practitioners online.

Now based in Taiwan, he practises, writes, coaches, and teaches from the southern port town of Kaohsiung, where he lives happily by a river, near a lake and close to the sea.
